The Legacy of Devraj K. Halaria

Devraj K. Halaria (otherwise affectionately known as Dave) was born in Kenya on the 21st April 1949. The second youngest of five brothers, Devraj grew up in a farming family – from an early age, he showed his passion and commitment for hard work, often helping out on the farm after school and during school holidays.

As their formative school years came to a close, Kenya was in the middle of political unrest having gained independence back from Great Britain. Due to the draconian laws brought in by the Kenyan government, life for the Asian population and many Europeans became tough with the strict working laws that prevented them from starting their own business. Both Devraj and his youngest brother Laxman set their sights on pursuing a better life and in 1968 they both came to London, UK just before the Kenyan exodus. Laxman went to finish his studies whilst Devraj began his UK working life as a machinist at CAV Engineering.

In the 1980s Devraj started Halarias Builders Merchants to support his young family which continues to trade today supporting his family.

Over the years, he worked tirelessly to support many charities, both here in the UK and back home in India. His memory will continue to inspire us all to work with the same values that defined him.

In 2014 we set up the Devraj K. Halaria Foundation to continue to support the many charities that dad supported.

Helping others

Having set his sights on a better life for himself and his family, Devraj still worked tirelessly as ever to help those he could. Having already set up regular festival events back home, he committed himself further here in the UK by setting up a temple for the local children and families. In his compassion, Devraj was keen to see the local children be able to enjoy the sense of belonging and community that he once had.

Started with little yet gave so much - the legacy of Devraj Halaria lives on.

Over the coming months, the friends and family of Devraj will be posting a variety of articles relating to his legacy. From his support to setting up a temple for his local community, to his commitment and support for causes back in his home town, we will be covering all aspects to honour the memory of Devraj.
